pdf L02 Membrane Physiology
Cell membrane creates an internal environment that is different from that outside the cell.
Intracellular compartment//extracellular

Hydrophobic central layer
Selectively concentrating various charged species within the intracellular comp
eg: organelles, proteins, cations/anions
→ Creates a concentration gradient→ electrochemical gradient→ electrical potential
→Resting Membrane Potential
Interior negative, exterior positive (-65 to -70mV) wrt outside
Resting membrane potential varies between cell type
Electrically Excitable cells are able to 'discharge' the standing potential = Action Potential
eg. Nerve Cells, Muscle Cells(cardiac)
