L08 Storage and Retrieval of Genetic Information
.ppt Genetic Information
Structures of Nucleic Acids
- DNA - Double stranded, Phosphodiester backbone, Nitrogenous bases, Stable
- RNA - Single stranded (can form double stranded sections), Phosphodiester backbone, Nitrogenous bases, Uracil used for Thymine, Ribose C2 has OH → Unstable.
- Base pairs: Base pairs are the information stored.
- Room for 1 purine/pyramidine within the helix. Allows for tight double helix
- Strand sequence on one side, dictates the other.
Genomes
- Protein coding genes <5% of our genome.
- Gene regulatory elements, promotion, may be far from gene; upstream/downstream from sequence.
- Genes split by regions of non-coding DNA, RNA sections must then be spliced out (Introns).
- Repeat sequences. Eg LINE & SINE. 1.4-6Kb. Approx 20% of DNA, source thought to be Viral, used for DNA fingerprinting.
