Ability to define oneself, live according to ones values

→ Forms an individual identity, because they are permitted to, have the right to.

Removing autonomy: Would result in an emotional response, impinging on individuality.

• Factors:

Autonomy Vs Beneficence

• Benevolent Concealment by Doctors, including regarding prognosis.
• Changed with Humanism, Autonomy.

Doctors now have no right to act in such a way: as they themselves cannot take into consideration the patients own beliefs and values.

Guidance on consent, shifts away from medical paternalism. Overbearing control.
